Meet Mayor William D. “Bill” Euille

A Leader for One Alexandria

William D. "Bill" Euille is a native and life-long resident of Alexandria. For over 30 years, he has devoted himself to improving the lives of Alexandria residents. In 2003, Bill was elected Mayor, the first African-American to hold this position in the 254-year history of the City of Alexandria. Re-elected mayor in 2006, Bill previously was elected three times to the Alexandria City Council (elected in 1994, 1997-when he served as Vice Mayor, and in 2000). Prior to his service on City Council, Bill served on the Alexandria School Board from 1974-1984.

As a product of the Alexandria public school system, Bill graduated from T.C. Williams High School in 1968. He received an academic scholarship to Quinnipiac College, a private institution located in Hamden, Connecticut and graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Returning to Alexandria, he joined a local construction company and began learning the trade. Within eight years, Bill rose to vice president/controller, a position having primary responsibility for all contracting, financial and administrative functions.

After spending 15 years with this firm, Bill founded Wm. D. Euille & Associates in 1987, a successful, Alexandria-based, construction services firm with multi-million dollars in annual revenues. Through the William D. Euille Foundation, which he founded in 1994, Bill contributes more than $50,000 a year to dozens of local organizations. An additional $20,000 is given to local groups through his construction firm. Bill served as the Alexandria United Way Campaign Chairman from 1998-2000.

Bill's professional accomplishments are matched by his dedication to community service. Currently, he holds various leadership positions with organizations that represent a cross-section of the community. Bill co-chairs the Alexandria Welfare Reform Committee (Alexandria Works! Coalition), and serves on the Board of Trustees of the INOVA Alexandria Hospital Foundation. Bill is a member of the city manger’s Quality of Life Committee and is Chairman of the Youth Policy Commission.

Bill represents Alexandria on the Board of Directors of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and the Washington METRO Council of Governments (COG), as Vice Chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, as Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Neighborhood Task Force, and as a member of the NOVA Transportation Commission (NVTC). Bill is an appointed member of the Governor's Council on Virginia's Future, as well as the Urban Policy Task Force. For a full list of organizations and committees that Bill serves on, click here.
